The Art Of Painting
The room is filled with soft blues and scratching sounds. A single subject is attempted by seventeen artists arranged in a circle, using pencils, pastels, and paint. Looking upward, a dance instructor sits as the subject in the middle of the canvasses.
Some artists are captivated by her graceful features and upswept hair. Others sketch her body and limbs, using either definite, precise lines or faint strokes augmented by shading. One watercolor painter from Crystal Lake creates an illusion of action, as she superimposes pose on top of pose. The group's weekly sessions give this landscape artist a chance to try out new techniques and enhance her figure drawing abilities. If you enjoy paintings articles like this one, visit oil painting from photo for other resources.
While it is natural to associate musicians with practice, she says most cannot draw an association between artists and the same. With one glance, she knows she has done a good job this time. When a portrait connects with a viewer through the subject's face and figure, it is deemed great, but greatness in art is rather random, attacking during practice or after long hours of study.
Two decades were a long time for one female portrait artist to stay away, and she returned to the group two years ago. There has always been a special spot in her heart for portraits. When she does one, she wants to capture whatever it is the subject is saying to her and try to put it on paper. Her impression of the model is that of royalty, and she uses unlikely color combinations of dark green, blue, yellow and white to convey this.
The layman may not see beyond the model's face colors, the way an artist does. Lighting is everything, adding cool tones, like greens and blues, and warm tones, like yellows and whites. This follows the tradition of Renoir, which she is trying to master. Most portrait artists use both live sittings and photographs in commission work. A live sitting allows the subject's personality to leave an impression on the artist, whereas a photograph is just convenient. The artist who can adequately capture any personality on canvas is truly great. This is because people show their true selves only momentarily. What she wants to capture isn't an exact likeness, though her works come out recognizable. She wants to get the inner person, and when she does, it usually comes out looking attractive. Articles on paintings like this can be viewed at oil paintings of angels.
Another challenge for artists is reconciling their impressions with how the patron wants to be shown. The subject of the portrait is given more life when vibrant colors are used.
