Metro’s world music compilations tend to vary widely in quality. Some of them feature few or no original versions of the songs they collect, substituting cookie-cutter re-recordings that only give a feeling of what the music is like, instead of presenting the authentic music of the place the album supposedly celebrates. Cafe’ Argentina is one of the label’s better collections, featuring original versions of songs by Astor Piazzolla, Orquesta Tipica, and Roberto Goyeneche. Not surprisingly, these acts provide some of the album’s highlights, including Piazzolla’s “Tanguedia III [BandOn?on Solo],” Orquesta Tipica’s “Recuerdo,” and Goyeneche’s “Vuelvo Al Sur [BandOn?on Solo].” Though the collection mostly focuses on older recordings by these artists, some more contemporary pieces, such as Marconi’s “Para el Recorrido” and Carlos Garcia and L’Orchestre De Tango De Buenos Aires’ “Al Maestro Con Nostalgia.” However, the main difference between the old and new performances is only a slight variation in sound quality, so the album flows from one track to another relatively smoothly. Overall, Cafe’ Argentina is a thoroughly enjoyable collection, and one of Metro’s better offerings. ~ Heather Phares

Different Focuses Of Different Artists

The room is filled with soft blues and scratching sounds. Pencils, pastel crayons and paint brushes stroke across paper as 17 artists, arranged in a circle, all strive to capture the same image in their own way. In her regular workout gear, a dance instructor sits on a small bench in the center and tilts her head upwards as the subject.

Her refined features and upswept hair take all the attention of some of the artists. Another bunch share the excitement they feel over her body and limbs, which they recreate with strong strokes or soft ones, shaded. A Crystal Lake painter has chosen to superimpose watercolor outlines of the model's various poses across one page, creating the illusion of movement. Primarily a landscape artist, she uses their group's weekly meeting to refine her figure drawing skills and to experiment with new techniques. According to the artist, art takes practice, contrary to popular belief. With one glance, she knows she has done a good job this time. Inspiration can strike at any time for artists, whether after hours of labor or a quick practice run, and portraits in particular require a rendering that reaches out to the viewer through the expression of the human figure.

Portraiture is the specialty of another female member, who rediscovered her love two years ago after being held back by the business world for twenty years. She has always been attracted by portraits. For her, these paintings are about understanding and then translating an expression onto canvas. She associates the model's confidence with striking colors, dark green, blue, yellow and white.

There is more to a face than colors, as the artist well knows. Tones created by light complete the picture, from cool greens and blues to warm yellows and whites. Renoir was acclaimed for this technique, which she has always wanted to try. Both live sittings and photographs will do for an artist on commission. While photos are convenient, live sittings allow the artist to observe the subject's personality first hand. But capturing it on canvas can be a challenge. This is because people show their true selves only momentarily. Though her end products are good depictions of the subject, this is never her primary goal. Her aim is to capture one's inner qualities, which makes her portraits all the more fascinating. Articles on paintings like this can be viewed at oil paintings realism.

When working on a commission, the artist must work within the parameters set by the patron. Vibrant colors can also be used to enhance portraits.

The Barnes & Noble ReviewPicasso and Friends in the Spotlight. In 1978, while collecting documentary photographs of the artists' community in Montparnasse from the first decades of the century, Billy Klüver discovered some unassociated photographs. One group in particular, showing the painters Picasso, Moise Kisling, Modigliani, the poet Max Jacob, and others in and around a cafe in Montparnasse, all appeared to have been taken on the same day. The people were wearing the same clothes in each shot and had the same accessories. With the challenge of identifying the date, photographer, and circumstances, Klüver researched the subjects' lives to establish the time and sequence of the photographs—totaling four rolls of film with six photographs each. His remarkably elaborate bit of detective work eventually led him to focus on the summer of 1916 as the likely time the photos were taken. He then measured buildings and plotted angles and lengths of shadows in the photographs to narrow the time frame to a spread of three weeks, when the people were in Montparnasse because they had exhibited in a nearby salon. "A Day with Picasso" recounts how Klüver established the precise date, reconstructed the sequence in which the exposures were made, and even managed to determine the exact location, appropriate time of day, and direction in which the photographer pointed the camera in each case. Finally, his investigation led him to identify the photographer as Jean Cocteau and the date of the photographs as August 12, 1916. Besides the central "portfolio" of photographs by Cocteau, the book containsadditional photographs and drawings, short biographies of the subjects, and a historical section on the events and activities in the Paris art world at the time. Remarkably, the arresting portfolio of photographs keeps step with an ingenious re-creation of what happened to a group of
