Artists And More Find Career Choices With Their STEM Degree From Online Course Programs

Animation is probably one of the biggest examples of teamwork in the artistic world. The production process resembles a sort of assembly line. The director/creator dreams up an idea, and then the cartoon goes through pre-production, production, post-production and then release.

One person who also helps the director get the whole shebang going is designer. They help the director create the visual look of the entire production, including major character sketches, background layouts and anything else in-between. In many ways, without their work the whole thing can’t get going.

One thing the industry has found is all designers love to draw. They have done so when they were children; imitating their favorite children’s stories or cartoons. Another thing they get good at is imitating what they love; then they start to come up with their own ideas.

What’s different about designers is they don’t necessarily have to have a degree in animation. One of the industry’s all-time greats, Disney’s Mary Blair, actually loved children’s illustrated stories and did them, too. On the other hand, what almost all designers have in common is they did get a Bachelor’s in the fine arts. It also didn’t hurt that they took courses in animation to learn how to tailor what they draw to industry standards.

What differentiates an animation designer from others sorts in the craft though is one very important thing. Unlike other graphic designers, animation demands a simplicity of line so other animators can replicate with ease. If the characters get to complex, they become difficult to animate, and end up looking stiff on the screen.

While at school, whether it’s an online college or on campus facility, one other thing a designer has to assemble is a demo reel (or now disk) along with their portfolio. The portfolio will display one’s best designs. The reel shows how they work when animated. This is in many cases even more critical than one’s resume as it gives directors the ability to actually see what the person can do.

Now armed with a good portfolio and resume, it’s time to look for a job. Usually, one starts as an animator’s assistant with the goal of becoming a full animator. If a director or other supervisor likes what’s seen, one might be asked to create a few designs. If the designs go over, one is on their way towards being a full-time designer. While there are many who like doing that for the rest of their career, one can also eventually become a creator or director in one’s own right.

It should be noted that the animation world is filled with freelancers. Those entering the field after completing course online programs usually work from job to job, and this includes animation designers. Still, the successful animator averages about $65,000 a year, depending on industry and location. Designers make much, much more. Then again, that should be the case for the person who gets the whole production line going. And who knows where life will take those with Online Design Degrees?
