Online Degree Programs And Resultant Degree In Technology Are A Powerful Combination

Animation is probably one of the biggest examples of teamwork in the artistic world. The production process resembles a sort of assembly line. The director/creator dreams up an idea, and then the cartoon goes through pre-production, production, post-production and then release.

One of the key positions in this process is the designer. These people assist in creating the look of a project, from overall appearance to specifics about the characters. They work hand in hand with the director; often a former designer. Without his initial drawings, the project never gets off the ground, period.

While the more they know about the animation process the better, what designers are really hired for is their ability to draw. Top designers throughout the industry all say they’ve been drawing since they were children, whether it was imitating their favorite Saturday morning cartoon or a Grimm’s Fairy Tale. Where they differed from other children is they stuck at it, and started developing their own ideas as they got into high school.

What differentiates a designer from many of his/her fellow animators is they aren’t restricted to just animation. One of Disney’s greatest designers, Mary Blair, actually had a background in children’s illustration, and learned from her husband, who worked for Uncle Walt. Yet she never really did any animation herself. Still, these days it actually helps if a designer does take animation courses while getting a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at a brick-and-mortar or online college. With this knowledge they will better understand the process.

Still, what sets the top animation designer from those who do other forms of graphic design is a fundamental understanding about one important element of cartooning. The work of an animation designer is known for its linear simplicity. The reason for this is this way an animator can quickly pick up and start replicating whatever the designer thinks up with ease.

Another very important thing an animator of any stripe learns at school is how to put together a good demo real and portfolio. The portfolio displays an animator’s best designs. The reel (or these days DVD disk) shows how well then move. The great thing about taking courses is one has accesses to many resources one couldn’t afford straight out of pocket, so that should truly be taken advantage of.

From there, one’s first job at a studio will be as an assistant to an animator. The animation world is a small one, and those with talent quickly are pointed out. From there, the goal is to become a full animator. Then, if one’s work proves to be exceptional, some director will ask the animator to generate some original designs. If the director likes them, he’ll ask for more. The goal is to build a rep as a designer, then on to something like art director, storyboard or even director/creator.

It should be noted that the animation world is filled with freelancers. Those entering the field after completing online degrees programs usually work from job to job, and this includes animation designers. Still, the successful animator averages about $65,000 a year, depending on industry and location. Designers make much, much more. Then again, that should be the case for the person who gets the whole production line going. And who knows where life will take those with Online Animation Degrees?
