Those With A Creative Mind Find Online Degree Programs A Strong Ally As They Earn Their Technology Degree

These days the process of making any form of major animation, from a theatrical feature film down to your favorite TV show, involves a production process that resembles an assembly line. Each person in that line has a specific responsibility and the project depends on each and every one of them.

One of the key positions in this process is the designer. These people assist in creating the look of a project, from overall appearance to specifics about the characters. They work hand in hand with the director; often a former designer. Without his initial drawings, the project never gets off the ground, period.

Those interested in animation design all have one thing in common. When they all children, they loved to draw. They were also fascinated with cartoons, whether the latest theatrical blockbuster or favorite Saturday morning TV shows. They also started imitating the drawings they saw.

What’s different about designers is they don’t necessarily have to have a degree in animation. One of the industry’s all-time greats, Disney’s Mary Blair, actually loved children’s illustrated stories and did them, too. On the other hand, what almost all designers have in common is they did get a Bachelor’s in the fine arts. It also didn’t hurt that they took courses in animation to learn how to tailor what they draw to industry standards.

What differentiates an animation designer from others sorts in the craft though is one very important thing. Unlike other graphic designers, animation demands a simplicity of line so other animators can replicate with ease. If the characters get to complex, they become difficult to animate, and end up looking stiff on the screen.

There’s another important thing one can get from an animation school that helps one get employment, and this is helping a student put together a good demo reel (or disk) and portfolio. A designer usually has both. The printed portfolio displays his ability to draw while the disk shows how well they animate. A school gives the student access to a number of tools that often can’t be afforded.

From there, one’s first job at a studio will be as an assistant to an animator. The animation world is a small one, and those with talent quickly are pointed out. From there, the goal is to become a full animator. Then, if one’s work proves to be exceptional, some director will ask the animator to generate some original designs. If the director likes them, he’ll ask for more. The goal is to build a rep as a designer, then on to something like art director, storyboard or even director/creator.

It should be noted that the animation world is filled with freelancers. Those entering the field after completing online course programs usually work from job to job, and this includes animation designers. Still, the successful animator averages about $65,000 a year, depending on industry and location. Designers make much, much more. Then again, that should be the case for the person who gets the whole production line going. And who knows where life will take those with Online Technology Management Degrees?
