Satchel $11.99 He is that rare American icon who has never been captured in a biography worthy of him. Now, at last, here is the superbly researched, spellbindingly told story of athlete, showman, philosopher, and boundary breaker Leroy “Satchel” Paige. Through dogged research and extensive interviews, award-winning author and journalist Larry Tye has tracked down the truth about this majestic and enigmatic pitcher. Here is the stirring account of the child born to a poor Alabama washerwoman, the boy who earned his nickname from his enterprising work as a railroad porter, and the young man who took up baseball on the streets and in reform school before becoming the superstar hurler of the Negro Leagues. In unprecedented detail, Tye reveals how Paige, hurt and angry when Jackie Robinson beat him in breaking the Majors’ color barrier, emerged at the improbable age of forty-two to help propel the Cleveland Indians to the World Series. (“Age is a case of mind over matter,” he said.  “If you don’t mind, it don’t matter.”) Rewriting our history of baseball’s integration with Paige in the starring role and separating truth from legend,  Satchel  is a story as large as this larger-than-life man. |

Those With A Creative Mind Find Online Master Programs A Strong Ally As They Earn Their Science Degree
Animation is probably one of the biggest examples of teamwork in the artistic world. The production process resembles a sort of assembly line. The director/creator dreams up an idea, and then the cartoon goes through pre-production, production, post-production and then release.
One of the key positions in this process is the designer. These people assist in creating the look of a project, from overall appearance to specifics about the characters. They work hand in hand with the director; often a former designer. Without his initial drawings, the project never gets off the ground, period.
Those interested in animation design all have one thing in common. When they all children, they loved to draw. They were also fascinated with cartoons, whether the latest theatrical blockbuster or favorite Saturday morning TV shows. They also started imitating the drawings they saw.
What’s different about designers is they don’t necessarily have to have a degree in animation. One of the industry’s all-time greats, Disney’s Mary Blair, actually loved children’s illustrated stories and did them, too. On the other hand, what almost all designers have in common is they did get a Bachelor’s in the fine arts. It also didn’t hurt that they took courses in animation to learn how to tailor what they draw to industry standards.
Still, what sets the top animation designer from those who do other forms of graphic design is a fundamental understanding about one important element of cartooning. The work of an animation designer is known for its linear simplicity. The reason for this is this way an animator can quickly pick up and start replicating whatever the designer thinks up with ease.
There’s another important thing one can get from an animation school that helps one get employment, and this is helping a student put together a good demo reel (or disk) and portfolio. A designer usually has both. The printed portfolio displays his ability to draw while the disk shows how well they animate. A school gives the student access to a number of tools that often can’t be afforded.
From there, one’s first job at a studio will be as an assistant to an animator. The animation world is a small one, and those with talent quickly are pointed out. From there, the goal is to become a full animator. Then, if one’s work proves to be exceptional, some director will ask the animator to generate some original designs. If the director likes them, he’ll ask for more. The goal is to build a rep as a designer, then on to something like art director, storyboard or even director/creator.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the salary of an animator is ranges from $56,000 to $70,000, depending on location and specific industry (film, game, etc). Top designers earn considerably more, depending on their reputation. It should be noted most designers are freelancers though, and work from job to job, however the skills they've learned in online master programs. On the other hand, the job satisfaction more than makes up for it and with Online Game Design Degrees, who knows where life will take them?
