Reasons Why Blue Light Acne Treatment Has Become So Helpful at Reducing Acne
One of the more effective methods to get rid of acne is with blue light therapy. Here is the reason blue light is effective in treating acne.
Many adults and approximately 85% of adolescents have suffered acne outbreaks. Pimples and other sores result from pores that become plugged with a mass of skin oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Once a pore becomes plugged the bacteria trapped in the pore start multiplying and infect neighboring tissues. This results in the redness and discomfort often associated with acne.
The vast majority of acne prevention measures involve several procedures. First, cleansing is helpful to eliminate excess skin oil on the surface. A mild anti-bacterial cream or gel is then used to kill surface bacteria. Then a gentle exfoliant cream or gel is used to help loosen dead skin cells to allow them to be washed away. By eliminating the three components necessary for acne (excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells) the vast majority of acne can be prevented.
After pores become plugged they form whiteheads or blackheads. These are tiny lesions and are different as a result of the location of the clog. With a blackhead, the blockage is near the surface where it can become oxidized and darken. When the blockage is deeper into the pore, the surface can close in around the pore keeping it light in color which produces a whitehead.
Cells surrounding the pore grow red, irritated and constitute a pimple as the bacteria inside the blocked pore start multiplying. The blemish can grow more serious after the infection spreads beyond the pore. As an example, pressure on a pimple may push infected oil further down into the sebaceous gland or even into deeper skin layers and form a cyst.
One key to coping with active acne is to kill the bacteria at the site of the pimple. This will reduce the irritation and decrease the size and intensity of the blemish. Though some anit-biotic prescription medicines are prescribed for severe acne, most people will benefit to a great extent from more localized treatments.
Acne light treatment is one such localized therapy. While sunlight has always been know to reduce acne, scientists examined precise colors in the spectrum to determine more particularly the range of colors that are truly helpful. One of the first groups to research this subject found that light within the violet range activated an organic compound, a porphyrin, within the acne causing bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.
Since acne bacteria multiply quickly, several treatments on consecutive days are often necessary to kill all the bacteria in a blemish. With the bacteria eliminated, the irritation is removed and the curative process can take place to restore the normal skin condition.
Of course, the blue light could be provided by full spectrum sunlight. But now dedicated lasers, fluorescent lamps, as well as LEDs (light emitting diodes) are used to deliver the exact wavelength of light that is most effective. Many dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is similar to an array of fluorescent lights that emit light with a 400nm wavelength. In addition, a lot of dermatologists use Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) on affected areas before the light therapy. The aminolevulinic acid is a photo sensitizing agent that exposed to blue light causes damage to certain skin cells.

Keep in mind that blue light acne treatment will not produce immediate results as the skin needs to heal. But lots of individuals find blue light acne therapy more effective than benzoyl peroxide and less irritating to their skin.
