Getting Rid of Acne Is Going to be Quicker Using Blue Light Acne Treatments
Blue light acne treatment is effective in helping to get rid of acne. You need to understand why blue light is so effective against acne.
Acne is a common skin condition among adolescents and many adults. An excess of skin oil (sebum) mixes with dead skin cells to plug up the pores and create pimples. Once a pore becomes plugged the bacteria trapped in the pore start to multiple and infect neighboring cells. The irritated areas are noticeably red and feel sore and become the pimples we link to acne.
The vast majority of acne prevention strategies involve three steps. First, cleansing is helpful to remove excess skin oil on the surface. Bacteria on the skin in next eliminated using a mild anti-bacterial cream or gel. Finally a gentle exfoliant cream or gel is used to help loosen dead skin cells to allow them to be washed away. By eliminating the three components essential for acne (excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells) the vast majority of acne will be prevented.
When pores become plugged they comprise blackheads or whiteheads. These are very small lesions and are different as a result of the position of the plug. With a blackhead, the plug is close to the surface where it will become oxidized and darken. When the plug is deeper into the pore, the surface can close in around the pore keeping it light in color which results in a whitehead.
Cells surrounding the pore grow red, irritated and form a pimple because the bacteria within the plugged up pore start multiplying. The blemish can grow more serious after the infection spreads beyond the pore. For example, pressure on a pimple can force infected oil deeper to reach the sebaceous gland or even into deeper skin layers and form a cyst.
You can understand how important it is to eradicate the bacteria at the location of the pimple. This will ease the irritation and decrease the size and intensity of the blemish. While some anit-biotic prescription medications are prescribed for severe acne, most people can benefit to a great extent from more localized therapies.
One such therapy is acne light treatment. While sunlight has always been know to help acne, scientists looked at precise colors of the spectrum to determine more particularly the range of colors that were truly effective. One early investigation discovered that light in the blue-violet color range was particularly effective. This color range affects an organic compound in the acne bacteria. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.
To be effective against the rapidly multiplying bacteria, three consecutive treatments are required to kill the whole set of bacteria within a pimple. Once the bacteria are gone, the swelling decreases and the cells start to heal.
Of course, the blue light could be provided by full spectrum sunlight. But now dedicated lasers, fluorescent lamps, as well as LEDs (light emitting diodes) are used to provide the exact wavelength of light that is most effective. Many dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is similar to an array of fluorescent lights that emit light with a 400nm wavelength. Frequently your dermatologist will apply aminolevulinic acid (brand name Levulan) to affected areas prior to the blue light therapy. The Levulan is photosensitive and exposed to blue light helps damage particular skin cells.
While treatments from a dermatologist may cost several hundred dollars each, inexpensive home devices have found there way into the market. Competition is keeping the price for most of the devices in an affordable range from around $40 to $300 or so.
Bear in mind that blue light acne treatment will not produce immediate results as the skin has to heal. But, in comparison to treatments like benzoyl peroxide, many people have found blue light acne treatment to be less irritating to the skin and more effective at getting rid of acne.
