Reasons Why Blue Light Acne Treatment is So Effective at Getting Rid of Acne
Blue light acne treatment is valuable in helping to get rid of acne. You really need to appreciate why blue light is so successful against acne.
Many adults and around 85% of adolescents have suffered acne outbreaks. Pimples and other sores result from pores that become blocked up with a mass of skin oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Bacteria within the blocked pore begin to multiply and inflame adjoining cells. This results in the redness and tenderness often connected with acne.
Most acne prevention measures make use of three procedures. Eliminating surplus oils on the skin is the primary step. A mild anti-bacterial cream or gel is then used to eliminate surface bacteria. Dead skin cells are loosened with an exfoliant so they can be washed away. By doing this the possibility for clogging the pores is seriously reduced and the chance of acne is minimized.
Whiteheads or blackheads are the preliminary expressions of a blocked pore. These are very small blemishes and differ as a result of the position of the clog. With a blackhead, the blockage is near the surface where it can become oxidized and darken. If the blockage descends a short distance into the pore upper portion of the pore can close over the clog and the clog continues to be light colored and forms a whitehead.
Cells encircling the pore grow red, irritated and form a pimple because the bacteria within the blocked pore begin to multiply. The blemish can grow more serious if the infection spreads beyond the pore. Pressure on the pimple can shove the infection into the sebaceous gland and in some cases split the cell structure allowing the infection to extend to lower layers in the skin.
You can appreciate how important it will be to eradicate the bacteria at the site of the pimple. This will lessen the irritation and reduce the size and intensity of the blemish. Severe acne is often taken care of with systemic medicines like oral anti-biotics. Most less severe acne outbreaks may be dealt with successfully by treatments applied in the affected area.
Acne light treatment is one such localized therapy. Direct exposure to sunlight has been known to relieve acne. But, full spectrum sunlight can damage the skin. So, scientists have found out more about precise spectral ranges to determine what is successful against acne. One early investigation found that light within the blue-violet color range was especially effective. This color range affects an organic compound within the acne bacteria. A singlet oxygen is released by a porphyrin component comprising the bacteria which helps destroy the bacteria.
Because acne bacteria multiply quickly, three treatments on consecutive days are often required to eliminate all the bacteria in a blemish. After the bacteria are gone, the swelling decreases and the cells begin to heal.
The blue light may be provided by lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fluorescent lamps, or even bright full spectrum light. Many dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is just like an array of fluorescent lights that emit light with a 400nm wavelength. Often your dermatologist will rub on aminolevulinic acid (brand name Levulan) to affected areas prior to the blue light therapy. The aminolevulinic acid is a photo sensitizing agent that exposed to blue light causes damage to specific skin cells.
While treatments from a dermatologist may cost several hundred dollars each, inexpensive home devices have found there way to the market. Competition is keeping the price for most of the devices in an affordable range from around $40 to $300 or so.
Remember that blue light acne treatment will not produce immediate results as the skin needs to heal. But, compared to treatments like benzoyl peroxide, many individuals find blue light acne treatment to be less irritating to the skin and more effective at eliminating acne.
