blue marlin fishing is considered the epitome of offshore fishing. This much desired sport requires a special skill due to the size and strength of this fish. It is also somewhat rare, making sighting and catching a special thrill. Due to the specialized gear required, it can be quite an expensive sport. Gear and style of fishing varies according to the size of fish sought, as well as fisherman preference.
Primary methods for catching these fish include artificial lures, rigged natural bait, or live bait. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. They also have particular procedures for effective fishing with marlin fishing charters. This gives a special challenge to know what to use and how. It means you have some input into how the fish is caught.
Artificial lures can be used for all marlin, from the smallest to the largest. They particular type used depends on what size fish you are wanting to catch. These fish are a very aggressive species. They are very attracted to the action of these lures and how they look in the water. The lures are constructed of a head made from plastic or metal, with an added plastic skirt. This specialized construction give the lure it special action. This challenges the fisherman to adjust the construction to get the greatest action for the fish sought.
The next type of gear is rigged natural bait. This type of gear is selected by the fisherman, based on preference of construction. They are made by wrapping wire or string around the bait and attaching a single hook or set of hooks. They are specially made to attract the fish desired. They are sometimes combined with artificial lures to make a skirted bait or combination of bait/lure.
Possibly the most challenging of all three types of gear is using live bait. The fisherman must judge how fast to troll to appeal to the fish but still keep the bait alive. Tuna is used as the bait, with skipjack being the preferred type of tuna. It is best to use this method in areas where the fish are heavily concentrated, such as near Fish Aggregation Device buoys or near underwater ledges.
Landing your catch is no easy matter. It can take up to six hours of intense, back-breaking work to land this huge fish. And, even after that many hours, you stand a chance of losing your catch. Some fisherman work as a tag team, each one working a period of time,then turning the fight over to another fisherman until all have worked the catch.
Some propose killing and landing the fish, using the reasoning that the fish will be so exhausted it will die anyway. Others propose tagging and releasing the fish in order to preserve the species. It is such a magnificent animal that some feel it is a shame to kill it. Excellent replicas can be obtained at a taxidermy shop to remind you of your accomplishment. Many fishing tours require you to tag and release.
