Blue Trails For Healthy Waterways

The signs of Spring are popping up everywhere. And along with nature's rebirth of flowers, grasses and bushes, I always feel re-energized, too. Sometimes, though, it can be a little disappointing to view the man created litter that often forms on the waterways over the winter. I personally paddle an inflatable kayak, but regardless of how you enjoy the water, it is often a lot more preferable to launch your kayak, canoe or fishing boat in a nice clean, healthy looking waterway.

There is a movement that is striving to improve that scenario ... American Rivers “Blue Trails" program. A Blue Trail by definition is the waterway equivalent of a hiking path. The group urges individuals to become involved and help keep these 'blue trails' clean and vibrant. The obvious benefit of a Blue Trail to an area is the recreational facet, but Blue Trails also help the communities that promote them. They encourage physical activity; help support native tourism and recreation-oriented businesses thereby helping the local economy. With these enhancements community pride also develops. A healthy river also provides cost effective flood control and clean drinking water.

When individuals get out and enjoy their rivers, they begin to care more for them. That's why Blue Trails will also be the driving force behind stopping pollution, removing dams that no longer make sense, improving poorly planned development along rivers and enhancing support for protections like Wild and Scenic River designations.

American Rivers made the “Blue Trails Guide” to provide you all the resources you have to have to establish a thriving Blue Trail in your community. To certify a successful Blue Trail you need to have a healthy river, that is why the guide focuses on river conservation. The guide has step-by-step instructions and practical advice on designing, building, and managing for conservation and case studies from experienced practitioners from around the United States.
