Here's Why Blue Light Acne Treatment Has Become So Useful at Reducing Acne
One of the more effective ways to eliminate acne is with blue light therapy. Here is the reason blue light is effective in treating acne.
Many adults and around 85% of adolescents have suffered acne outbreaks. Pimples and other sores result from pores that become blocked up with a mass of skin oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Once a pore becomes blocked up the bacteria within in the pore start to multiple and infect neighboring tissues. This results in the redness and soreness often linked to acne.
Generally acne prevention strategies make use of several steps. First, cleansing is used to eliminate excess skin oil on the surface. A mild anti-bacterial cream or gel is next used to kill surface bacteria. Finally a mild exfoliant cream or gel is employed to help loosen dead skin cells so they can be washed away. By doing this the possibility for clogging the pores is greatly reduced plus the chance of acne is minimized.
Blackheads or whiteheads are the preliminary expressions of a blocked pore. These are tiny lesions and are different as a result of the location of the plug. With a blackhead, the clog is near the surface where it can become oxidized and darken. When the clog is deeper into the pore, the surface can shut in around the pore keeping it light in color which produces a whitehead.
Cells adjoining the pore grow red, irritated and form a pimple as the bacteria in the blocked pore start to multiply. The blemish can grow more severe after the infection spreads away from the pore. As an example, pressure on a pimple may force infected oil deeper to reach the sebaceous gland or even into deeper skin layers and form a cyst.
One solution to managing active acne would be to destroy the bacteria at the location of the pimple. With the bacteria gone, the cells should no longer be irritated and can start to mend. Severe acne can often be treated with systemic medications like oral anti-biotics. Most less severe acne outbreaks can be dealt with effectively by treatments applied locally.
One such therapy is acne light treatment. While sunlight has always been know to help acne, scientists examined specific colors in the spectrum to determine specifically the range of colors that are actually effective. One early investigation discovered that light in the blue-violet color range was especially useful. This color range impacts an organic compound in the acne bacteria. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.
Since acne bacteria multiply quickly, several treatments on consecutive days tend to be required to kill all the bacteria in a blemish. As soon as the bacteria are gone, the swelling decreases and the cells start to heal.
Of course, the blue light could be provided by full spectrum sunlight. But now dedicated lasers, fluorescent lamps, as well as LEDs (light emitting diodes) are employed to provide the exact wavelength of light which is most useful. An array of special fluorescent lights is used in the Dusa Blue Light device, often employed by dermatologists, to provide a 400 nm wavelength blue light. In addition, numerous dermatologists use Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) on affected areas before the light therapy. The aminolevulinic acid is a photo sensitizing agent that exposed to blue light causes damage to specific skin cells.
A single therapy session in a dermatologists office may cost $200 or more. But, there are a variety of devices you may purchase for use right at home that many people have found effective. Competition is keeping the price for most of the devices in a reasonable range from around $40 to $300 or so.
Keep in mind that blue light acne treatment requires a few treatments to kill the bacteria and several days for the skin to heal. So, this is not an overnight process. But many of us find blue light acne therapy more practical than benzoyl peroxide and less irritating to their skin.

Friday's Heroes $14.49 This book is about some ghetto kids of the 1930's and 40's who became famous because they learned how to fight better than anyone else. We call them boxers and they came from the neighborhoods of New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and other cities. The Television Set was introduced to Americans in the late 1940's as an alternative to radio. The Friday Night fights soon followed. The Friday Night fights were broadcast weekly by Gillete and Pabst Blue Ribbon from the late 1940's into the early 1960's. Along with "The Milton Berle Show" the Friday Night fights helped to sell millions of television sets during these years as families and friends gathered together to watch their heroes perform. FRIDAY'S HEROES is also about a young man from the Italian section of Hartford, Connecticut who went on to become "One of the Greatest Fighters" in the history of the sport. His name was Willie Pep. This "Will O' the Wisp" was World Featherweight Champion from 1942-1951 and campaigned for twenty-six years. Finally, this is a book about such people as Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Graziano, Chico Vejar, Kid Gavilan, Joey Giardello, Billy Graham, Rocky Marciano, Ezzard Charles, Joe Louis, Jake LaMotta, and others who are no longer the ghetto kids making a living from boxing, but middle-aged men with the "roar of the crowd" behind them. Today, the athlete - never to be confused with a boxer - is a celebrated figure. Yet as boxers these men seemed to have a different kind of respectability in our society, perhaps because they had to fight for a living. Nevertheless, no warrior that stalked the arena was more gallant than these kids. Willie PepRemembers...Friday's Heroes is a book about people, these people. |
