Blue Trails For Healthy Waterways
The elements of Spring are showing up everywhere. And along with nature's rebirth of flowers, grasses and trees, I perpetually feel re-energized, too. Sometimes, though, it might be a bit disappointing to see the human made litter that usually accumulates on the rivers and streams over the winter. I personally paddle an inflatable kayak, however no matter how you relish the water, it is usually more appealing to launch your kayak, canoe or fishing boat in an exceedingly nice clean, healthy looking waterway.
There is a movement that's striving to improve that state of affairs ... American Rivers “Blue Trails" program. A Blue Trail by definition is the waterway equivalent of a hiking path. The group urges people to get involved and assist in keeping these 'blue trails' clean and alive. The obvious benefit of a Blue Trail to an area is the recreational facet, however Blue Trails also facilitate the communities that promote them. They encourage physical activity; facilitate support native tourism and recreation-based businesses thereby serving the regional economy. With these improvements community pride also develops. A healthy river also provides value effective flood management and clean drinking water.
When people get out and enjoy their rivers, they begin to be more concerned for them. That's why Blue Trails will also be the driving force behind stopping pollution, removing dams that are no longer needed, improving poorly planned development beside waterways and building support for protections such as Wild and Scenic River designations.
