Learn Times Tables To Have 100% Instant Recall
I have just read an article by Deb Russell entitled ‘Times tables in 21 days’.
Deb highlights how essential it is for a child to learn times tables well for both school and for their later lives. She points out that with increasing curriculum content teachers have little time these days to make sure that children have really learned the tables well.
Clearly, if a child does not know the tables this could have detrimental consequences on their chances of school success.
The article gives different ways for parents to help their children with the task of learning times tables.
To do this we will go through the solutions offered by Deb Russell’s articleSkip Counting - Children can use their fingers to count and a method that uses fingers is called ‘skip counting’.
Children can then progress to 2, 4, 6, 8 or 5, 10, 15 on their fingers. This strategy can help children get the right answer.
In children’s early years learning using their fingers to work with numbers is a great as children are learning by doing something physical. The problem is that counting on fingers is not so great later when your children need to know the answers to tables instantly.
The point is that when children use their fingers to work out a times table answer it makes finding the answer very slow when a fast answer is what is needed.Doubles -Another suggestion in the article is to learn the ‘doubles’ 3 x 3, 4 x 4, 6 x 6 etc. The idea being that if you know 6 x 6 = 36 it is easier to work out the 6 x tables above it.
This method encourages a slow method of learning the table.Children will learn times tables far more effectively if they use a method which leads to them learning with an Instant Recall ability that takes little time and effort.
The article suggests using rhymes to learn times tables, linking music and rhythm to learn the tables.
This method is not the best method to learn times tables, and not recommended.Instead children have to work their way through the rhyme to get to the particular answer that they are after. This takes time and a lot of effort and is a method that we do not agree with other than for having some fun when teaching very young children.
Another method is learning tables both ways eg. 4 x 6 and 6 x 4.
Learning opposites like this makes learning easy by reducing the time and work required to learn times tables.What is also needed is a strategy for your child to learn times tables in an efficient way.
What the parent or teacher needs to do is to strongly and actively encourage this method by making it clear to children that this is the way to learn and to provide them with a method by which it can be done.Conclusion - The common problem in all but the last suggestion is that these methods of learning the Times Tables use up a lot of time and do not result in Instant Recall of the Times Tables.
To really learn times tables well and to the answers without thinking about them what children need is a method by which they can know them with 100% Instant Recall.The very best method to learn times tables uses joint learning of opposite tables as part of a very clear and easy plan that achieves 100% INSTANT RECALL.
