Handmade Jewelry Box For The One You Love
Creating beautiful objects has been in the nature of man from time immemorial. A handmade jewelry box in marquetry is one such innovation where thin slivers of different colored wood are pieced together in a complex design. Precise cutting and gluing onto a surface is essential to get the entire box to look as one unit.
Also known as Moaragh, Marquetry is an evolution from the art of inlay. This form of wood based decoration first began with the Persian and Egyptian cultures primarily in their religious as well as royal decor. Over time, this art of beautifying objects percolated down to smaller items like jewelry boxes.
If you look closely you will see that a real Marquetry jewelry box has neither a drawing nor any color on it. Special hand tools are used to cut out lines that will be filled in with thin pieces of wood that have been sliced at precise angles from trees, with specific tools. Once the image has been filled out, it is finished with sandpaper and a coat of polish.
Marquetry requires precision and this is achieved through several methods, of which the 'window' is the most popular. With a traditional knife used in the art form, openings are made in the image to make way for pieces of veneer. The sheet from where the bit will be cut is then placed on this to get maximum accuracy in shape, grain, and depth and then cut out.
Some forms of Marquetry use just two variations of wood to create seaweed, a scroll-like design. In another form, a number of woods as well as ivory are used to create panels that have birds and delicate creatures like butterflies to make foliate and arabesque, as they are known. A form made famous by Andre Charles Boulle, known as "Boulle" or "Buhl" makes use of brass and tortoiseshell.
Marquetry too has evolved and you will find several variations to the form. Khatamkari is a Persian adaptation of marquetry where surfaces are embellished with not just wood, but bone and metal as well, on a variety of surfaces. The smaller the surface decorated, the more expensive it will be, but you are assured of a unique piece.
Wave marquetry too, is another form in which the designs are fluid and seamless. You will find jewelry boxes with designs made in veneers of Wenge, Lacewood as well as Tiger Maple, Bubinga and in some cases Bloodwood. This form is quite popular for a sophisticated look to jewelry boxes.
Hailed as painting in wood, marquetry draws parallel with piecing together a jigsaw puzzle. The work, time, and labor involved are extremely tedious but the final product leavesyou in awe. The money spent on a genuine piece of marquetry on a jewelry box will be worth the investment and can be preserved for a life time.
