The Words and Music of Ice Cube

The Words and Music of Ice Cube

$56

Ice Cube is one of the most influential figures in the history of rap and hip-hop. Best known for the vitriol of his angry black man recordings of the late 1980s and mid 1990s, Ice Cube epitomizes the genre often referred to as gangsta rap. Much of his music from these years is focused on the disturbing realities of life in black urban ghettos, and as a result it chronicles such complex and controversial issues as racial stereotypes, street gangs, racial profiling, black on black crime, teen pregnancy, absentee fathers, and male-female relationships. His recordings with NWA are noteworthy for their sardonic humor in discussing dire issues. The group's landmark CD Straight Outta Compton (1988) is a palette of urban woes recounted in aggressive and hostile street vernacular, while Ice Cube's recordings of the 1990s now represent paradigms of the gangsta style. The first three chapters of The Words and Music of Ice Cube explore Ice Cube's recordings between 1988 and 1996 and situate Ice Cube in the context of other rappers of this period-most notably Public Enemy, Ice-T, Tupac, Biggie, and Snoop Dogg-whose music also chronicled explosive issues in urban ghettos. The fourth chapter considers Ice Cube's career in film, beginning with a discussion of his performance in Boyz n the Hood and ending with a look at his most recent films, Barber Shop, Barber Shop II, Are We There Yet? And Are We Done Yet? The fifth and final chapter looks back over all of Ice Cube's work to date and considers his impact and his legacy in music and popular culture at large. .

Juice

Juice

$3.36

Spike Lee’s longtime cinematographer, Ernest R. Dickerson, made his directorial debut with this violent story about four Harlem teens whose lives are changed when a store robbery goes wrong. The film has been likened to an urban The Wild Bunch, but it is far too artificial for that. With Dickerson’s eye, Juice understandably looks great, but at the end of the day it is only a slightly better versi…

Office Space: The Motion Picture Soundtrack

Office Space: The Motion Picture Soundtrack

$4.71

Ice Cube’s “Down for Whatever” is the highlight on Office Space’s soundtrack, a classy West Coast production with just the right proportions of laid-back groove and simmering tension. Scarface turns in a credible enough track (“No Tears”), and the Geto Boys’ impersonation of Bill Clinton at the end of “Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta” is funny, though not terribly accurate. But Canibus and Biz …

Ten Best Gift Ideas for Men   by Jennifer Galgift

Gift ideas for men are difficult to come up with simply because no two men are alike. Okay okay, some women might beg to disagree, but that's another story. One way to go about coming up with good gift ideas is to consider what type of man he is. Let's break this down into several basic personality types, and see if we can find one great gift idea for each type of man.

Artistic men are creative, impulsive, sensitive and visionary. They appreciate beauty, unstructured activities and variety. They enjoy interesting and unusual people, sights, textures and sounds. They solve problems by creating something new, and prefer to work in unstructured situations using their creativity and imagination. Gift ideas can range from musical instruments, artistic versions of useful things such as the melting alarm clock, to a vinyl turntable radio. My pick for the best gift is the lomographic camera, an old style still film camera whose purpose is not to get the perfect picture, but to get an artful and evocative picture that says something about the photographer.

There really isn't a so-called athletic personality, but there are people who love all things sports, either engaging in sports themselves or following sports in the media. And there are those who are simply driven to physically excel. Some gift ideas can range from funny golfing accessories and a football helmet snack tray, to all style of sports magazines. My pick for the best gift is the extendable tai chi sword. It can just as easily be used at Kung Fu practice as displayed on one's rec room wall.

We all know the brainy personality. They range from very techno-savvy geeks to introspective bookworms. They tend to be logical and on a constant quest for knowledge. They are practical and unsentimental in their approach to problem solving. Abstract, theoretical and technically adept, they are naturally inventive. Gift ideas range from gadgets like the karaoke for iPod, unique chess boards like the LED glow chess set, to all variety of fascinating reads like "Top Shelf Forensics." My pick for the best gift is the Rubik's TouchCube, which uses a motion-detecting accelerometer to allow players to slide the cube with a simple swipe of their fingers to mimic the moves of the original Cube.

For many people, hiking, canoeing, mountain biking and kayaking are activities they're only lucky enough to enjoy on vacation. But for a few, adventure sports are a regular and important part of their lives. These people range from weekend warriors to career outdoor experts. They love all aspects of the out of doors, including the backyard garden. Gift ideas range from camping equipment and portable hammocks, to hydration packs and survivors books. My pick is the "Fix it in Foil" book which provides recipes for fixing almost any kind of food with just a campfire and a roll of aluminum foil.

The Achiever type person is always on the go. They are optimistic, confident, industrious, efficient, energetic, practical, and a self-starter. They are able to recover quickly from any setbacks and to charge ahead to the next challenge. The Achiever likes to stay informed and they are very good at motivating people. Gift ideas may include cuff links, desktop accessories like a fine wood pen set, and day planners. My pick for the best gift is the Sleepsonic stereo sleeper pillow. This little beauty can be used to help the stressed out workaholic sleep more soundly or simply to relax and it can be used for watching TV while one's spouse sleeps. A gift that has multiple uses is great for that person whose interests you may know know very well.

The trendy person prefers the latest, most up-to-date clothes, accessories and products available. Important to them are the present and what's "in" now. Their style is influenced by celebrity fashion, magazines, and the actions and belongings of important people. They know how to have fun with fashion, and are a true "fashionista." Gift ideas start with anything beginning with a small "i," like a speaker system for the iPhone, cologne such as Hummer H2, and any clothing that is trending like a harris tweed newsboy cap. My favorite gift is the summer style fedora crusher hat
