This isn’t the kind of album Joel’s fans had come to expect, nor is it much like what Joel went on to do later. Think of THE NYLON CURTAIN as a one-off concept album that works because the one thing Joel retained here was his deft pop touch, and to hear him apply it to a relatively “difficult” album is well worth the work. Parental advisory: Joel uses a seven-letter conjugation of the F-word in “Laura,” which just wasn’t done at the time, not in mainstream pop albums anyway. And he goes out of his way to enunciate it. |

The Curtain $85 Henry Schogt met his wife, Corrie, in 1954 in Amsterdam. Each knew the other had grown up in the Netherlands during World War II, but for years they barely spoke of their experiences. This was true for many people — the memories were just too painful. Years later, Henry and Corrie began to piece their memories together, to untangle reality from dreams. Their intent was to help others understand what had happened then, and how it influenced and affected not only their lives but those of all who survived. The seven stories in The Curtain reveal how two families — one Jewish, one non-Jewish — fared in the Netherlands during the German occupation in World War II. Each vignette highlights a specific aspect of life; all show how life changed for everyone, and forever. Four stories are based on the author’s memories of his own non-Jewish family: Henry’s friendship with a Jewish teenager; the conflict of personal antipathy with the realization that help must be provided; the Schogt parents’ determination to do the right thing; the difficulties of coping with an aunt with Nazi sympathies. These are stories about the randomness of survival and the elusive nature of memory. For the Jewish family, three stories drawn from the memories of the author’s wife and family demonstrate the bewildering situation of trying to make impossible life-determining decisions when faced with confusing and deceitful decrees. The family must struggle with the luck — or absence thereof — of finding refuge when forced from their homes, and with the perplexing inconsistencies of the collaboration of Dutch authorities and police with the Nazis. The Curtain emphasizes the difference between the options that were open to non-Jews and Jews in the Netherlands. Non-Jews could freely choose whether to actively resist the Germans, collaborate with the Nazis, or just to do nothing, and try to live a normal life in spite of wartime restrictions. Dutch Jews, on the other hand, did not have a choice — whatever they did, whatever decisions they made, they were doomed, and it often seemed, when someone survived, just simple luck. A short introduction about the war years and an appendix with a chronology of decrees, events, and statistics, provide background information for this haunting memoir of those disturbing years during the German Occupation in the Netherlands. |

Why Most Businesses Need Air Curtain Doors
Have you noticed that when you enter some commercial establishments that right there at the entrance you are greeted, not by the security guard, but by a sudden gush of strong air coming right down from the ceiling? That forceful air is coming straight from one of those air curtain doors.
What are these air curtains to begin with? These are nothing more than electronic air blowers that release a strong and continuous current of air. It is directed either straight down to the floor or at an angle towards the entrance or exit, whichever way you are facing it. If you think it was placed there just to make you feel that strong air, you are wrong.
So to help you better understand the many uses of this type of traffic doors, I have enumerated and explained some of these:
One of its primary usage is to help keep away the fumes and odors from entering the room or facility. This is highly efficient if you have an enclosed area that you need to prevent any foul smelling odors from coming in and contaminating the air within. Why not just have a typical door? An air curtain is your best option if you expect regular human traffic to and out of that room.
Do you want to keep your room free from small contaminants like the usual dust and dirt? Then an air curtain can certainly be of great help to you. What it can do is to direct the flow of the air current coming from the air door towards the direction of the incoming air from the outside. This air will then hit the contaminants, particularly the dust and the dirt and in turn will prevent these from even entering the room.
If you need to maintain the temperature of the room and again you need a entrance that is always open, installing an air curtain is a sensible thing to do. It serves as a blanket of flowing air that helps block or prevent the outside air (of different temperature) to contaminate or change the temperature of the room.
But it is not just the entrance of a room that you can use such a device. In fact there are air curtain manufacturers who create such blowers to help dry up the conveyor belts of a manufacturing facility. It is a heated type of air curtain that effectively and quickly dries a conveyor belt or any part of the manufacturing equipment.
