Cars – Complete Greatest Hits $8.88 If rock’s most successful and memorable acts have usually succeeded by wrapping their own distillation of music history and personal tastes in whatever fashionable trappings are currently gripping the culture, it’s hardly surprising that the Cars remain one of the most enduring symbols of the punk/new wave era. This 20-track anthology distills that argument perfectly. Ric Ocasek’s songs embody a s… |

The Freedom We Have From Being Able To Drive Our Own Transport Is Immeasurable, So Why Do A Lot Of People Are Reluctant To Drive Beyond Their Own Area
Since I passed my driving test many years ago, I’ve driven all over the UK, and in Ireland, and done thousands of miles in the United States as well. I recently had the idea to attempt to work out roughly how many miles in total I have spent at the steering wheel and, at a very rough guess, I reckon it’s around about four hundred thousand miles. Looking at a total like that, I suppose it’s probably a good thing that I really enjoy driving!
I do admit that it is a mystery to me why that a lot of people seem to consider driving such a chore and only drive because they have no other option. I love to have the option of being able to climb into my own transport and go to wherever I want whenever I want. I stop in whatever location I select for as many hours as I want. What’s not to like?
Of course, as with almost everything we do in life, I do get that we all make our own choices. Many people enjoy swimming – I don’t (I’m a firm believer in the fact that if we were still intended to swim, our ancient forebears wouldn’t have wasted their time spending countless millennia evolving so that most mammals could live on dry land), some think that daytime television is interesting, but many do not, some believe in gods or higher beings, many choose to dye their hair rather than show its genuine colour and some opt for Laser eye surgery so that they no longer need to wear glasses.
So I wouldn’t argue that we can all make choices in life but with the majority of things, like those detailed above, we always opt for the course of action that we want most. For example, I don’t go to the swimming pool, or look at daytime TV, I like to dye my hair but I’m content to use glasses rather than pay for Laser eye surgery. But when it comes to driving, a lot of people who don’t like it still drive.
The reasons why are varied, and usually quite acceptable – living too far from any public transport routes, wanting to move heavy shopping or transport elderly or disabled relatives, needing transport for work and so on. But unfortunately, not really wishing to drive must mean that possibly you become a less competent driver.
I’ve got into cars driven by friends who openly admit that they are very nervous when they are driving because they don’t like it. Just pulling out into a main road that nervousness is evident, and there has been more than one occasion where I’ve been forced to cover my eyes throughout the journey, as I just didn’t want to see all of the objects that we were managing to avoid hitting. (Maybe drivers who feel this way should have Laser eye sensors attached to the car which produce a warning noise when they are in danger of hitting something!)
Please don’t think I’m pretending that I am a brilliant driver. No-one is, because human beings are such that even the very best at doing anything will inevitably make occasional errors. But naturally, if you enjoy doing something, you want to do it more, and the more you do it the more experienced and comfortable you become. It’s logical!
I am aware that I could become more capable as a driver by passing an advanced driving test, but that’s an item that never quite gets to the top of the list. And we all have days when they are they are overtired and don’t really concentrate as well as they should. Also, I should probably think about having Laser eye treatment to correct my sight. My distance vision is very good, but the displays on the dashboard are usually a little out of focus because of my need to use reading glasses, and you can’t keep putting your glasses on whilst driving to see how many miles you’ve done or what the time is!
In the end, anyone is able to drive a car on a public road once they have passed the appropriate driving test, so on the day they passed at least, their driving must have rated as competent. My honest opinion is that too many people, when they’ve passed their test, never travel very far or outside of the area where they live and so never build up the confidence to drive long distances or visit places they’ve never been before. And that, to me, is why a lot of drivers never even think that they can enjoy driving – they consider it simply an unavoidable means to an end, rather than the chance to gain unlimited freedom.
