My music teaching career was cut short by a drastic cut of music programs from the school district. Fifty music teaching positions were eliminated after my first year. Many school districts have seen such budget cuts. Such program cuts have coordinated school budgets with school funding, but also have caused music instruction to shift away from the public school into the realm of private instruction.
Many potential music students will not ask for music lessons knowing their parents could not well afford to pay for them. Many children will solve the problem of paying for lessons by pretending lessons are unimportant, or are unnecessary.
But provide a child, or wishful teenager or adult, a karaoke machine and possibly an instrument, and hidden interest in music may be ferreted out. Using the capabilities of karaoke machines for kids or older musicians, a musical inclination can and will develop where there is interest. Karaoke can in this way assume part of the music-teaching burden where funding for private lessons, and transportation to lessons, may be unavailable.
If a willing student has the means to study, a student will seek out opportunities to develop musical ability. Much information is available on the web.
An important consideration for a musician is access to funds, to purchase sheet music with CD, or karaoke music, or the equipment to slow down or change pitch or tempo of a recording. The cost of CDs and sheet music may be out of a student's ability to pay. For this reason, family and friends should note that a good way to build funds for music is contribution to a gift account by many individuals, so that an appropriate purchase may be made by the recipient of the gift, once enough funds are accumulated.
With the encouragement of gift certificates which the musician may have requested while setting a limit on family members' and friends' contributions, the musician can explore about equipment, and identify a desired music selection or piece of musical equipment, knowing eventually musical goals can be achieved, without causing hardship to donors who want to further the musician's goals.
