Driver Precautions: Sleep Debt Collects

Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are coming, bringing added leisure time. There is, however, one catch to this: The American vacation season always comes dressed in highway accidents and death tolls. During the over busy three day weekends, which are usually accompanied by high accident rates, the drivers have to drive for long hours, skip sleep, and succumb to the demands of holiday activities.

Most people behind the wheel would feel as if they have to push the limits, even though their body can't do it anymore. The only real solution, however, is to rest. The American's 24 hour, work hard, play hard culture makes it quite easy to deduce this as a natural occurrence. While science has yet to find a failsafe solution for asleep at the wheel driving, research is providing important clues on the Biomechanics of driver fatigue and paving the way for development of onboard alarm systems capable of rousing a driver who is dozing toward catastrophe. Driver fatigue is one of the culprits in highway accidents, and that is nothing but a fact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates about 100,000 crashes every year, with 71,000 injuries and 1,500 fatalities. Aside from the money allotted to the victims, these crashes result to $12.5 billion in property loss every year. Some people estimates that over one million crashes are due to driver inattention and that driver fatigue plays a big role on it.

Drivers are prone to accidents long before the actually fall asleep, says a professor of psychology at Washington University in St.Louis, MO and one of the world's most trusted person when it comes to eye blinks and fatigue driving. His one decade of study was aimed at finding a way to devise a gadget that could detect the symptoms of driver fatigue in a person. He believes that accidents could very easily be avoided then. They put a large majority of efforts in the trucking industry, because they know that truckers need this technology the most. For every vehicle, the gadget will cost up to several thousand dollars, but this price will soon drop as the devices become available for passenger cars.

The question is: what sorts of fatigue symptoms are detected by the gadgets? The gadgets will focus in several predictors, such as long blinks, and delayed eye closures. These are good predictors of the human behavioral pattern. Being able to detect the late stages of sleep onset is one of the features of this device, since the alertness level of a driver usually fades as he lapses to sleep. At Cert IV OHS you'll find more expert resources on online education.

Corrective action has the least chances of working when the person is in the late stages of the sleep onset. As a person transitions to sleep, he or she gets short mental lapses, characterized by irregular eye movement patterns. This factor is of utmost importance to the research. If these mental lapses can be identified and predicted, they may prove much more useful in providing timely advance warning to a driver edging toward drowsiness.
