The ZMP celebrates with a U4RIA CD release party
When you place a group of interesting and talented musicians on stage in a venue that screams ‘real jazz’, then add a sprinkling of cats who smile when the music moves them, and you have a fun and relaxed look into the life of a song, the love of music and the bond that great music and musicianship can yield. On Monday, June 29th, The Zeke Martin Project demonstrated all of that and more.
The band arrived at Sweet Rhythm in NY early, not expected since all but one of the players’ lives in Boston. You begin by asking: What band in their right mind would have a cd release party so far away from their local and loyal fan base? But when the band begins to play and people walking by come in, you realize that it doesn’t matter. The audience paid the cover without hesitation, and said “Thank you” in surprised tones when they received the free U4RIA cd which, by the way, is another part of the already memorable experience.
On this night, some of the big names in the Jazz music scene were in attendance. It is partially due to the fact that Zeke’s playing is reminiscent of true jazz improvisation. The name U4RIA is a perfect description of the rapture experienced when you are introduced to the first song “Freedom Jazz Dance”. The audience was pleasantly surprised by the mood that this unique arrangement set for the night.
Zeke demonstrated his incredible vision by including songs and performances that are not frequently showcased. For “TeenTown” Zeke added a tapper, Andrew Nemr and the stage exploded into a collaboration of musical interjections. It was unexpected and the entertainment value was amazing. The ZMPs rendition of “My Funny Valentine” brought a sense of nostalgia to the crowd while the vocalist, Nina, transformed “Summertime” into a funky and infectious groove.
The band consists of Craig Weiman on Bass, Anthony Morris on Sax, Yusaku Yoshimura on Keys, Gordon O’Connell on Guitar and Zeke Martin on drums.
U4ria has been well received. You can hear U4RIA on WBGO, Jazz88 in New York City as well as other radio stations throughout the country. Scott Yanow, author of ten jazz books including The Jazz Singers, Jazz On Film and Jazz On Record 1917-76 says “Zeke Martin has made a musical mark for himself… In addition to the high musicianship and the individual creativity, what are most notable… are the group’s distinctive sound and the creative arrangements. Recommended.”
