At the time I was teaching music in both the public schools and privately, my students all wanted to learn music. My problem was not keeping the students interested, but insuring that they learned in an organized manner, so as not to become distracted in the classroom, and so that they would build a solid foundation and have a sense of ongoing accomplishment.
Keeping a student engaged was a matter of providing to the student ways to himself have the opportunity to play or sing, and the occasional well-timed guidance. The more a music student could perform in a formal manner, both for himself/herself, and at times for others, the more the student made progress.
One important ingredient of keeping a student's learning momentum going was a music choice that would develop music capability gradually and logically. This was usually a matter of selecting age-appropriate and grade-appropriate music and teaching aids.
But after an age- and grade-appropriate music selection, a student needs a teacher.
Unlike just listening to a recording and attempting to play along, one way to turn a recording into a teaching example is to change the tempo of that recording to a tempo the student can match, while keeping the pitch correct for the voice, instrument, or sheet music key. Slowing down the example is the way instruction by example is made effective.
Some Emerson karaoke machines for kids include pitch control. More expensive karaoke machines may also have tempo control. Both pitch and tempo changers may be found on the affordable TASCAM trainer, for either vocal or instrumental students. Both types of "karaoke" machines may cancel the vocal line, so that a karaoke-type performance as the soloist may be tried.
A karaoke machine is a reliable way to engage the student during practice, and insure there is an always-available example to follow when an actual teacher is absent. A student has a successful auditory example demonstrating the proper sound, keeping not only the practice going, but also the vision of what the performance should be like.
Practice is necessary in fine-tuning musical skill. With or without formal study with a teacher, a music student will continue to grow with the help of karaoke.
