Laser Printing for Printed PCBs
In the past, if you wanted to make fabricate your own printed circuits, the most difficult task was transferring your designs to your PCB material. It called for one of two complicated procedures, either photo reproduction or traces transfers, which required special pens, light boxes and other tools. Today, however, the job is made much easier thanks to laser jet printers that are easily affordable for most consumers.

The procedure is simple and quite inexpensive. The only tools required are glossy photo paper, a laser jet printer (You cannont use an inkjet.), and a clothing iron.
Making a Printed PCB with the Toner Transfer Method
1. Print a positive image of your PCB tracing at the exact scale you need it. Use the darkest and highest quality settings available on your printer
2. Cut away the excess paper leaving an edge just slightly larger than your PCB board
3. Prepare your copper by lightly sanding the surface with at least 400-grit sandpaper. Then clean the surface of your PCB material with rubbing alcohol. Be sure not to leave any fingerprints on the side where the traces will be transferred
4. Set the clothing iron to high and let it come to temperature for at least 10 minutes. If the iron has a stem setting, turn it off
5. Take the copper PCB material and lay it on a heat-resistant surface. Use the iron to heat the copper surface for about 5 minutes
6. Carefully set the printed traces onto the preheated PCB material and put the iron on both. Use even pressure to apply heat to the entire surface of the paper. If your iron’s surface is smaller than your board, you must slowly move iron over the paper’s surface to even apply heat to it. Do this for about three to five minutes. The transfer will be complete when you can start to see the traces through the back of the paper
7. Next, submerge the board, with the paper still on it, in a container of hot water. Soak the paper for at least 15 to 20 minutes or until the paper begins to separate from the copper, leaving the transfer on the copper’s surface
