Among them is ‘TANGO – ELEG A DE QUIENES YA NO SON,’ which features an unusual combination of performers: traditional tango musicians, a German conductor, and a Flemish orchestra. Rudolf Werthen, who leads the Orchestra of Flanders, conducts this disc, which contains the music of the late, great Astor Piazzolla. In addition, virtuoso bandoneon artist Juan Jose Mosalini, along with other guest performers, adds a special touch to an already excellent recording.This CD boasts a wide assortment of material, the strongest being the instrumental tracks. Although the vocal works, such as ‘A Homero,’ dedicated to famed tango lyricist Homero Manzione, are touching and performed with heartfelt abandon, it is the non-vocal selections that prevail. The luxurious ‘Tanguedia’ starts the CD off with a bang, and Mosalini’s expert musicianship accentuates the rhythms and movements of this great work. ‘Preludio no 9′ is another example of Piazzolla’s compositional genius, with Mosalini, pianist Osvaldo Calo and guitarist Fulvio Paredes all competently backed by conductor Werthen. This collection contains a symbiosis of cultures, styles, and above all, expert musical ability. |
