Why are game testers important in the grand scheme of things?
Bugs in the video game world are glitches that could compromise the quality of the gaming experience. Unless you are playing the game seriously, you may never be able to spot these bugs. There are major bugs that involve system function and technical compatibility issues. There are bugs that could debilitate the game completely, like rare items not showing up in the sprite's inventory. When testers identify these bugs and report them at once, the gaming company can rest assured that the quality of the game they will release is top notch.
Some companies scrimp on testing and open the game to beta players. If alpha is game programming stage, the beta stage refers to the testing phase. But doing an open beta and relying on customers to find the bugs themselves can be problematic. Using non-paid players to test a game may result in plummeting of the game's popularity among players. Paying several people to test games is much more practical than having to deal with customer complaints later on.
