Some Of The Reasons The Elderly Play Video Games
I have enjoyed my life so far. I still lead an active life despite the fact that I have reached an advanced age. Some of my activities are bringing me back to the days of my youth. When Christmas rolled around this year we were able to surprise our grandchildren with one of the motion gaming systems and with the recent xbox 360 kinect release date we were able to get him something that not all of his friends had, but the amazing part was how much fun it was for me to play the games with my grandchildren.
I went through my teenage years learning how to play video games. They are not the same as the games that are being played today. Back in the old days of video gaming, we had to have these big controllers that were very basic. I could tell right away that the newer platforms were nothing like what I first had. Gone were those huge consoles and remote controls that had a big round dial on them. Everything was going to be done wirelessly. Playing the new systems was going to require physical activity. This brought a new level of excitement to video gaming.
Once the gift was open by the youngsters and after they set it up we all took turns playing with it. Playing games got my blood flowing again. It was making me sweat, and I did not mind. We got to play with my grandchildren a few more times after the holidays and came to a decision. We would become gamers again and purchase a system for ourselves. We looked forward to getting some physical activity on a regular basis. The gaming system was everything we expected.
There were three different systems for us to choose from, the Nintendo Wii, the Playstation Move, and the xbox 360 kinect, and there seemed to be good things and bad things about each system but in the end we chose the Xbox since that is what my grandchildren already had and they would be able to enjoy it whenever they came over to visit at our house. Along with the platform we purchased a couple of games that we thought we would enjoy and that others would also enjoy.
The first thing we used with our new platform was a fitness title. It seemed so much more realistic than the videos that we used to use. It was not long before my wife joined me in the exercises. This was an unexpected benefit. Because we were in the comfort of our own home, there was very little to stop us from exercising. One of the reasons we would give for not exercising was because it was cold or raining out. This was not going to work anymore thanks to the games. In just a couple of weeks of using the game we began to see how our bodies were benefiting from the activity. It is hard for any one to deny the benefits of regular physical activity. It was not long before we got some of our friends interested in the gaming system and they started exercising with us.
The most unexpected thing about becoming a gamer again was how many people wanted to play with us and the fun of doing it with them. I played the games in my room alone when I was a kid. The new platforms draw people to them. There are times when I can go online and play a game with my grandchildren even if they are not with me. Video games has built a bridge between the generations and also to people I did not expect to have any relationship with. That was an unexpected result.
