Gamers Have A Strong Partner With Courses Online Programs
It’s amazing to think, but slightly over two decades ago the animation industry was considered a moribund industry in the U.S. Even the mighty Disney nearly closed its animation wing due to lack of profits. Then in 1989, the debut of the film 'The Little Mermaid' and the TV show 'The Simpsons' sparked a turnaround that has saved the production process.
There are two key reasons why the animation industry has become such an in-demand field these days. The first is the development of computer-generated imaging (or CGI), while the other reason is the equally huge growth in video games. Thanks to the computer, it’s now possible to produce games that make the original Final Fantasy look like cave drawings. This in turn has created a new hybrid profession, the game animator.
At his or her core, a gaming animator has to have the same basic skill set as his or her TV/film comrade. These days they must be as equally skilled at a desktop as with a paintbrush. All must have excellent visual story telling skills, as well as the visual acuity of a professional painter. Knowledge of the most popular animation software is also standard.
When it comes to going to college, a young high schooler should quickly learn to develop a demo reel (or now disk) as well as graphic portfolio. Basic knowledge of the entire production process is now becoming standard at the good animation schools such as NYU or Cal Arts.
Where the gaming animator differs from the more traditional TV, film or other animator is what they do with their skills. Storytelling in the video world doesn’t follow a linear path. The reason for this is the game player is in control of what’s on the monitor, and not just sitting by passively being entertained. If the player’s character wants his character to kick an opponent in the head or hand him a bouquet of flowers, there must be an animated sequence for either decision.
When it comes to getting financial aid, the portfolio and demo disk have major play. Potential students who come up with product as good as the pros will get immediate interest from producers. If the student needs more refining, there are also a number of grants and other financial assistance out there besides the Pell, SEOG and other standard routes. A little homework and some advice from a school’s financial aid officer yield results.
As it is, there really aren’t that many working in the field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates about 20,000 as of 2009, and it doesn’t really differentiate between film and gaming that readily. What is known are over nearly half are employed in California, which also offers the best pay at nearly $80,000 a year.
