Becoming a video game tester may be the ideal job for you if you like video games in the first place. You might have heard about video game testers in the past and wondered if they really exist. Here are some more details about the job and why so many people want a career testing games.
What makes this job relevant to a video game company?
Testers are primarily asked to play a video game to look for bugs. Unless you are playing the game seriously, you may never be able to spot these bugs. If not identified and properly dealt with, these bugs could lead to more glitches. There are bugs that could debilitate the game completely, like rare items not showing up in the sprite's inventory. Game companies need avid gamers that can understand how a game works even if it is not completely done yet.
Some companies scrimp on testing and open the game to beta players. An open beta comes after the alpha stage, which is game creation. But conducting an open beta and letting customers play the game at its most raw can be very problematic. These players are under no obligation to report bugs, and will likely share their critiques of the new game in community boards or blogs. Customer complaints may come in droves and the customer service may never be able to deal with each complaint properly.
Game Updates and The Role of Testers
Players of video games become loyal when they have a lot of expansions to look forward to. Sequels are always needed if the company wants to improve the popularity of the game. Some examples include Final Fantasy and Resident Evil. Testing the expansions is also one of the responsibilities of video game testers.

Video game testers move on to the support arm of the video gaming company. Some testers become in charge of the hot line. Finding solutions for players is one of the main responsibilities of video game testers. Irate players usually call the video game company to report bugs and to complain about the game play.
