Even though video gaming took its share of hits from the recession, that isn’t stopping kids from dreaming about being game designers. Who can blame them? It’s still a $20 billion industry that is recovering quickly. Besides, who doesn’t also dream of seeing their recreation become their vocation? The big difference between a guy who sits on the couch griping about the latest game (and how he’d fix it), and the person who designs it is night and day.
What they’ve realized is a game designer is a form of software applications engineer or programmer. They have taken the time to learn what the coding and machinery they play with actually does and then went to school to learn even more, particularly in math, logic, and computer-related areas.
Designing video games has been the dream of kids all over the world. The sad thing is, half of them do not even realize how easy it is to get started. Right when you graduate high-school, you can get started on your way to becoming a video game designer. Just go online, and look for an online school that offers the classes you are looking for. Most of these colleges will have financial aid available if money is a problem.
As it happens, one can’t turn around or go on the Internet without seeing advertising selling the educational services of gaming school or another. As computer software applications is a torridly hot area, there are many non-accredited institutions out to cash in on this field. This makes it harder for both the students and the legitimate schools. As such, one should do a little due diligence; get on a search engine, and type a targeted school’s name followed by the word “scam”. If the school’s name pops up repeatedly, it’s probably a good idea to avoid it.
It should also be recognized that recruiters prefer to hire game designers and programmers who have four year degrees in their appropriate field. True, a programmer can get away with an Associates degree or vocational certificate, but it will only get them so far. Another thing to consider is there are many reasons why one should get their degrees online over brick and mortar schools.
The usual course load for a game designer includes courses in computer science, software engineering, and/or mathematics. Adding courses in computer information systems is also a good idea when considering multiple platforms of a game. While most recruiters prefer a programmer with a 4-year degree, there are many times one can get a job with an Associates Degree or a vocational certificate and then working one’s way up both the work and educational ladder.
Another very important aspect of the designer is strong management and communications skills. The designer almost always leads a team of programmers, animators, marketers and even beta testers, many of who work remotely from their homes. He or she not only has to effectively lead such a team, but also be able to produce on the money reports to superiors.
From there, one’s earnings are highly dependent on how successful your project becomes. The average software publisher pays a designer with an applications engineer degree $87,000 on the average. When a designer comes up with an idea that leads to a top selling game, the money can literally go into the millions.
With the availability of accredited online universities, students can work and learn, perhaps even continuing their own game play creativity on the side. The prospective designer should take advantage of classes offered at online colleges to get them where they want to be. If a young designer can put it all together through online course options, they can end up in a position where play is work and work is play. In how many other jobs can one get paid to play?
