Video Games - A Little-Known Marriage Killer
The difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys. Many women find this out the hard way. It doesn't matter how old a man is, he's still going to enjoy playing games ranging from football to golf to video games. It's all good when he plays in moderation, because it's an excellent way to relieve stress and help him forget the cares of everyday life. However, when he begins to play anything to excess where it starts infringing on his time with you and his family, then it's time to call it quits. Indirectly, video games can easily ruin even the best marriage.
Experts can't seem to agree on whether video gaming has become a real addiction though. Chronic gaming does share numerous features with other types of addiction, as manifested by spending an inappropriate amount of time thinking about a game, planning strategies, and playing over and over again. Addicts have a hard time not being distracted and can have a hard time keeping their lives in order, especially when it comes to their marriages.
There have been numerous complaints from spouses and parents although it hasn't been labelled as a true addiction. You need to try talking to your spouse if you are having these problems. It's important to see if your spouse is receptive to this. If you find that your spouse isn't receptive to this, then you should definitely try talking him into doing various activities with you. Encourage him to participate in other activities. If you find that he resists all of these attempts, you may have to accept the fact that he's addicted.
There are only ineffective methods to treat video game addiction however. The addiction can be treated using various forms of therapy sessions, including individual, group, and couples therapy. A continuing addiction will only increase the amount of stress in the marriage, and the two of you may end up getting divorced. The best way to deal with gaming addiction is to do your best to prevent it in the beginning. It can be difficult to develop a loving relationship again if you wait to try to fix the problem.
