Video Games Can Help With Real Drum Skills
Video game consoles have really advanced since we first played Pong, PacMan and all of the other classics. Who could have thought up decades ago that a video game would be used to teach new skills?
Rock Band is one video game that is fun to play, but they also say at Harmonix Music that if you master the Rock Band drum set on the 'hard' setting, you can pretty much play the drums for real! Question is though are you really playing the drums, or just following the pattern you see on the screen? If you are able to play along with the video game, that does not translate into the real world and does not mean you will be able to play a real drum kit. To play real drums you need to be able to read music. which you won't learn playing a game; excellent coordination and rhythm. If you can't read sheet music you may never be able to be a professional unless you are musically talented and able to hear what to play. Bands today don't use electronic drums like were so common in the 1980's . Real drums give the drummer more control over the volume, pitch and duration of the drum note and cymbals.
One thing real drums won't need is Guitar Hero cymbal repair cable, as they don't have cables that are so badly made that they always break.
Even a basic drum kit is far more advanced than the Guitar Hero or Rock Band drum kit. For a non-musician, I'm sure the mental image of a real drum kit is overwhelming! Ponder for a moment you're sitting behind a huge drum kit, knowing that you are responsible for setting the rhythm for your band and they all depend on you. If you get to that point you must be a excellent drummer, but for a beginner even the Rock Band drum kit can be too much.
Learning drumming starts with knowing have to keep the beat. Do you just need to be able to keep rhythm if you want to learn to play the drums? Not reality, no. A quality drummer adds their own touch to the music and enhances it as well as providing a base rhythm for the rest of the band to follow. You don't always notice the drums, but if you were to remove them out of the song you definitely would notice for sure!
So, can Rock Band teach you to play the drums? Most likely not, but you can sure start learning the basics. Learn drumming basics through the Wii games, practice your counting out the beat, and you will be starting your one way journey to becoming famous! Just don't forget to pick up a replacement Guitar Hero World Tour cable before it breaks!
