Could Video Games Be Sabotaging Your Marriage?
Many married women find out the hard way that the only difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys. Regardless of their age, men love playing games, especially video games. It's a good way to relieve stress as long as it's done in moderation. But, if video game time starts to overlap with family time, then it can certainly start causing problems in the marriage.
Experts don't know whether or not this has become a true addiction though. However, it can bear resemblance to addiction if the person plays it too much and spends too much time developing different strategies. An addict has a difficult time keeping their behaviors in check, and the other areas of their lives, including their marriages, begin to suffer due to their constant distraction.
Although playing video games on a chronic basis hasn't been deemed a true addiction, many wives and parents have a problem with it. Spouses have to talk to their counterpart about limiting their favorite acitivity and try to balance their time better. It's important to see if your spouse is receptive to this. If you find that your spouse isn't receptive to this, then you should definitely try talking him into doing various activities with you. Encourage him to participate in other activities. If he resists all of your attempts in favor of his video games, then it's likely that he really is addicted.
There are various ways that can be used to treat video game addiction, but there aren't many and the ones that do exist aren't terribly effective. Individual, group, and couples therapy can be used to control the gaming addiction. You may find that your marriage is headed towards divorce if the addiction continues. It's best to prevent the problem from occuring in the first place. In the future, it will be very difficult to change his behavior so you can develop a loving relationship again.
